How did you get hired?

When you got your wine job, how did you get hired?

Odds are good it wasn’t just your interview going well.

Odds are good it wasn’t just the piece of paper you carefully organized to highlight your awesomeness.

Odds are good it wasn’t just your enthusiasm for fermented grape juice.

You got hired because of who you are as a person, what you bring to the table, your abilities, and your track record.

You might not be looking for a new job right now, but remembering how and why you got hired is a good way to pull yourself out of a slump, charge forward, take chances, be willing to hear “No!” more often, make one more sales call at the end of the day, and keep fighting the fight.

In other words, don’t forget what got you where you are. And don’t be surprised if you have to get hired again in the future. Sorry, but it’s true. Jobs change, this industry changes, and many people are surprised to wake up one day realizing a job hunt has to begin.

Plan now. Work hard. Build. Create. Take the chances that only come with discomfort. It’s the only way to grow, and the only way to find security.
