“What can I do to help?”

When delivered with honesty and empathy, is there a more powerful statement a person could possibly make?

There are situations in life when simply offering help is not only the right thing to do but the only thing you can do.

When you see someone who is injured.

When you happen upon a person in an emotionally desperate situation.

When your neighbor breaks their arm.

When a friend is diagnosed with cancer.

And even in our professional lives. When a restaurant says they are sliding quickly toward having to shutter the doors. When a retailer says they just lost a parent. When a co-worker gets into a bad accident.

Don’t freeze. Don’t wait to see what others around you do. Just take one step forward and use the magic words: What can I do to help?

Everything else will fall into place after that.
